#ProtectCarersBenefits campaign

We supported the Carers UK campaign to protect carers benefits, we heard from many Carers who were worried about the proposed changes to Personal Independence Payment as part of this welfare reform.

Carers UK have shared an update on the Bill and what it means for Carers, you can also read more on their website by following the link at the bottom of the page:

· The Universal Credit Bill was passed on the 22nd July 2025 and will now become law.

· The Bill has been significantly amended since it was first introduced to Parliament.

· The Government removed all proposed changes to tighten eligibility for Personal Independence Payment (PIP) from the legislation. As a result, unpaid carers will not lose their eligibility for carers’ benefits. These changes came following significant pressure from unpaid carers and disabled people. As a result of collective campaigning:

· There will be no cuts to PIP, or to carers’ benefits.

· Any future changes the Government looks to make to PIP are now delayed until at least Autumn 2026, and will only take place after a full, co-produced review of the benefit with disabled people and carers.

These wins reflect the power of collective voice.

Carers UK “sincerely thank everyone who took action, signed our open letter to the Prime Minister, and wrote to MPs as part of our #ProtectCarersBenefits campaign. In the process, we stopped 150,000 carers from losing their benefits by the end of the decade.” Despite these successes, the Bill still includes significant cuts to the health element of Universal Credit (UC).
